The traditional folk art of papel picado (literally "perforated paper") is a detailed technique of hand-cutting thin paper to form elaborate designs. Papel picado is most famously used for celebrations surrounding the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos ("Day of the Dead").

Observed from October 31st to November 2nd, Dia de los Muertos is a multi-day holiday that commemorates and honors departed friends and family members. Small altars are created for deceased loved ones, decorated with skulls, skeletons, marigold flowers, and ofrendas ("offerings") usually consisting of foods that the deceased person liked while he/she was alive. In some parts of Mexico it is customary to carry a reminder of the dead -- often in the form of a skull image or small skeleton doll -- for good luck.

This pocket square is made using deadstock fabric printed with a Dia de los Muertos papel picado motif. Only 12 pieces were produced, and no more will be made once they sell out.
