This t-shirt is a collaboration between Good Fishing and San Diego-based artist Raúl Guerrero. Raúl's "Yee Mee Loo" painting, reproduced for this t-shirt, is part of a series of fictional travel posters that he painted in the late 1980s, referencing his experiences living in various cities around the world. The imagery in these paintings is characterized by a touch of nostalgia and evokes a mythical energy, both common elements in Raúl’s body of work.
Once located in LA’s Chinatown, Yee Mee Loo was a popular artist hangout restaurant and bar in the 1970s and 80s. It was known for its legendary juke box and spectacular carved wooden bar and altar; a tradition of burning incense; an eclectic mix of regular patrons; and inexpensive Chinese food available next door.
Yee Mee Loo closed in 1989 after fifty years in business, though its iconic interior elements were eventually salvaged and moved into Cinnabar restaurant in Glendale, where they were housed until 2010. Today, the last remnants of this true Los Angeles classic can be found at Good Luck bar in Los Feliz. Good Luck, roughly modeled after Yee Mee Loo, still serves their famous blue curaçao-infused “Tidy Bowl” cocktail.
